My current thermostat has two different sets of wire terminal labels. What terminals should I select in the Sensi app?
Depending on the brand and functionality of your current thermostat, you may find two sets of wire terminal labels when you remove your existing face plate. Many thermostats are designed to control different types of systems, so the terminals you enter within the Sensi app during installation should reflect your unique system type.
Common examples of thermostats with two sets of wire terminal labels are shown below. If you have a conventional system, you should follow the “Conventional” terminal labels when entering your current wiring in the Sensi app. If you have a heat pump, follow the “Heat Pump” terminal labels when entering your current wiring in the Sensi app.
If you’re unsure of your system type, you may need to reference the model number of your outdoor compressor, and/or contact the manufacturer of your outdoor unit. Remember that a conventional A/C unit only provides cooling. While a heat pump is also an outdoor compressor, it provides both cooling and heating. So, if your compressor turns on during the heating season and provides heat, then you have a heat pump. If your only heat source comes from an indoor furnace or boiler system, or if you do not have heat, then you have a conventional A/C unit.
Some thermostats may not clearly label “Conventional” and “Heat Pump” terminals. You may need to consult with the manufacturer of your current thermostat or an HVAC professional before selecting wire terminals in the Sensi app.
After confirming your system type, use the Sensi app to walk through the installation steps. This includes taking a picture of your old thermostat wiring before removing any wires, just in case troubleshooting is required later. Be sure to select the wire terminal labels that correspond to your system type. Installing wires in the incorrect location can result in the following:
- System runs past your desired set point
- System provides hot air when in the Cool Mode
- System provides cool air when in the Heat Mode
- Both heat and cool run at the same time
- System does not turn on
*A c-wire is required to operate the Sensi Touch Smart Thermostat.
**Heat-only, Cool-only and Heat Pump systems require a c-wire to maintain a Wi-Fi connection.
